CASTLE, FOOD & FESTIVALS
Bute Park becomes the best place to eat in Wales this weekend
If you only do one thing this weekend, eat your way through Bute Park.
Feast On Cardiff lands in the capital for the first time, running Friday through Sunday. It's the South West's award-winning independent food festival, born in Bristol two years ago, and this is its Welsh debut. The pitch is simple — no chain restaurants, no big-brand stalls, just the independent operators, street food traders, and producers who actually make Cardiff and Wales worth eating in.
The line-up is genuinely strong. The Dough Thrower will be slinging wood-fired pizzettas on slow-fermented dough. Tân, from the Neighbourhood Kitchen team, brings live-fire cooking built around charcoal and flame. Wok Hei is previewing a new contemporary Cantonese concept ahead of opening properly later this year. There's Greek souvlaki from Meating Point, organic vegan churros from Churros Hermanos, and Gilly's Coffee back on the road for its ninth year.
It's not just eating either. Open-fire cooking demos, wine tastings, a banqueting area, a cookery school, axe throwing for the brave, and a Food Cardiff panel exploring how the city earned its Gold Sustainable Food Places status in 2024.
📍 Bute Park, Cardiff 🗓️ Friday 29 – Sunday 31 May 🎟️ Tickets via feaston.co.uk
A short walk from the castle, easy on the train, and the kind of weekend where you can pick at a dozen things and call it lunch. This is exactly what Cardiff does well when it's at its best.
As always, this newsletter exists because of you and people who love this country as much as I do. Thank you for being part of the All in Wales community.
✨ WHAT'S ON ✨
📚 Hay Festival — final weekend (closes Sun 31 May) The world's most famous book festival wraps its 2026 run this weekend in Hay-on-Wye. If you've left it late, late tickets and walk-ups are usually findable for the smaller talks. Pair it with lunch in town and a wander along the Wye.
🎓 Urdd National Eisteddfod — Ynys Môn (Mon 25 – Sat 30 May) The youth Eisteddfod closes on Saturday on Anglesey. Around 90,000 visitors expected over the week. The Maes is free to enter and it's the best place in the country to hear young Welsh voices in song, poetry and performance. A proper celebration of the language.
🦕 Dinosaur Takeover — Eagles Meadow, Wrexham (Sat 30 – Sun 31 May, 11am–3pm) Half-term won't be over for everyone — kids who've still got Friday off can finish the break with this. Dinosaurs and Dino Rangers roaming the shopping centre. Free, and surprisingly well done.
🌃 Wrexham Night Market — Queen's Square (Fri 30 May) The much-loved night market is back for another season. Street food, independent traders, drinks and live music in the heart of the city. One of the best summer evenings in North Wales.
🛍️ Wrexham Artisan Market — Summer Edition (Sat 30 May, 10am) On the same weekend, the artisan market returns with a summer edition. Worth pairing with a visit to the new Wrexham Football Museum if you've not been yet.
🌳 Bodnant Garden, Conwy — Bees and Butterflies family week (until Sun 31 May) Last weekend of the half-term family programme. Garden quiz, hands-on craft, and one of the most beautiful gardens in Britain in late spring bloom.
🏉 WELSH SPORT THIS WEEKEND 🏉
Stormers v Cardiff Rugby — URC quarter-final, Cape Town (Sat 30 May, 14:30 BST)
The big one. Cardiff Rugby finished second in the Welsh Shield this season and have travelled to Cape Town for a URC quarter-final against the Stormers at DHL Stadium. It's a daunting tie — South African sides at home in this competition rarely lose — but Cardiff are Wales' best chance of a deep run, and after the season Welsh regional rugby has had, even getting to this point matters.
Win it and they're into the semi-finals on 6 June. Coverage on Premier Sports and S4C.
A reminder that the football season is done and dusted across the Welsh sides. Cardiff City's early-bird season tickets are on sale until 5pm Tuesday 2 June if you're already thinking about 2026/27 in League One.
🌤️ THE WEEKEND FORECAST 🌤️
Friday — A mixed start to the weekend. Bright spells with cloud building through the afternoon, around 21°C. Roughly a 1-in-3 chance of a shower, so worth having a jacket to hand if you're heading to Bute Park on the opening night.
Saturday — The pick of the bunch. Largely dry with sunny spells, highs around 21°C, just a 10% chance of rain. If you're doing one outdoor thing this weekend, do it Saturday.
Sunday — Cooler and cloudier, around 19°C, with a 1-in-5 chance of a light shower. Still perfectly fine for Feast On or a wander, but pack a layer.
Monday — The wet one. Around 17°C with a 75% chance of rain through the day. Indoor plans recommended — and worth remembering this is not a bank holiday. The next one is the Summer Bank Holiday on 31 August.
Tuesday — Clearing up a touch. Around 18°C, drier than Monday but still a 1-in-3 chance of showers. A return-to-work day that won't quite let go of the weekend's weather.
