PIRATES, RAINBOWS & DRAGON RIDES

If you do one thing this weekend, head north and give Conwy the full day it deserves. The Pirate Festival is the excuse — but this little walled town is one of the great cultural treasures of Wales, and far too many people pass straight through without clocking what's on the doorstep.

Start at Conwy Castle, Edward I's 13th-century masterpiece and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Climb the towers for one of the finest views in the country — out across the estuary and back towards the mountains of Eryri. Then walk the medieval town walls: over a kilometre of them, still almost completely intact, looping the rooftops with the castle at your back.

Down on the quay, squeeze into the Smallest House in Great Britain — that famous little red cottage on the waterfront — and if you've an hour spare, Plas Mawr is the best-preserved Elizabethan townhouse in Britain, all ornate lime-plaster ceilings and Tudor swagger. (Worth a quick check of Cadw opening times before you set off.)

Finish with chips on the harbour wall, boats bobbing in front of you. Add a few cannon-firing pirates to the mix and you've got a faultless Welsh day out.

Here's where to be and what to know this weekend.

🏳️‍🌈 Pride Cymru 2026 — Cardiff (Sat 13 & Sun 14) The big one. Wales' largest LGBTQ+ festival takes over Cardiff Castle and the city centre, with the mile-long parade winding through town on Saturday and two days of music, stalls and celebration. Expect colour, noise and a brilliant atmosphere right across the capital.

🚴 The Dragon Ride — Margam Park (Sun 14) One of the UK's iconic cycling sportives rolls out from Margam Park, with routes carrying thousands of riders through the Vale, Bridgend and up into the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons). If you're driving in that corner of the south on Sunday, expect plenty of cyclists on the roads — give them room.

🎤 Barry Manilow — Utilita Arena Cardiff (Sun 14, 7:30pm) Could it be magic? The Copacabana legend brings his arena tour to Cardiff Bay. A guaranteed singalong.

🎶 Depot Live at Cardiff Castle — Louise + Kate Nash + 911 (Sat 13) An outdoor throwback night under the castle walls, part of the Depot Live summer series. Pop nostalgia done properly.

🎹 Anna Lapwood — New Theatre Cardiff (Sun 14) The superstar organist and TikTok sensation brings her soaring, cinematic show to the New Theatre. Something a bit different for a Sunday.

🎵 RNB Mania — Tramshed, Cardiff (Sat 13) & The Big Queer Picnic — Sophia Gardens (Sat 13) Two more for the list: an R&B festival night at the Tramshed, and a relaxed Pride-weekend picnic in the green at Sophia Gardens.

🏴‍☠️ Conwy Pirate Festival — Conwy (Sat 13 & Sun 14) The town's brilliant annual maritime knees-up returns. The headline moment: the pirates storm the harbour aboard their ship Vilma, cannons blazing — only to be met with a "vigorous rebuttal" from the castle guns and militia on the town walls. Family-friendly chaos all weekend, with stalls, music and plenty for the kids.

🎬 MadFabulous — Sinema Llangoed, Anglesey (Sat 13) A special screening of MadFabulous, the film inspired by the flamboyant life of Henry Paget, the 5th Marquess of Anglesey. Saturday's showing comes with a "Discover Your Inner Marquis" party afterwards — music until midnight. Tickets via the Llangoed village hall website

A warm, settled spell arrives just in time, with the weekend the pick of it — and Sunday the standout. A light layer for the evenings is all you'll need.

☀️ Friday 12 June — 18°C Partly sunny with dry spells and a light breeze. A good day to get out and about.

☀️ Saturday 13 June — 20°C Dry and bright, plenty of sunshine and barely any rain risk (around 5%). The pick of the weekend.

🌞 Sunday 14 June — 23°C The warmest day. Warm and largely sunny with just the odd cloud and only a slim chance of a shower. A proper summer's day.

🌤️ Monday 15 June — 21°C Staying warm and mostly dry, with just a small chance of a passing shower.

⛅ Tuesday 16 June — 19°C Turning a touch fresher and more changeable, with sunny spells and the odd shower possible.

Bottom line for the weekend: a belter. Both days are dry and warm, Sunday the standout — ideal whether you're cheering on the Pride Cymru parade, out on the Dragon Ride, or watching the pirates storm Conwy.
