FATHER’S DAY, TAFWYL & KITES

SOUTH WALES | This is our top pick of the weekend — and it doesn't cost a penny.

Cardiff Castle throws open its gates this weekend for Tafwyl's 20th anniversary — the ultimate celebration of Welsh language music, arts, culture and community. Over 40 artists are set to perform across five stages, with headline sets from Candelas and Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog, plus an international flavour this year with artists from Ireland and Brittany joining in as part of a new minority language collaboration initiative. Sunday evening culminates in a special 20-year anniversary musical extravaganza.

This is one of those rare events that manages to be simultaneously a proper festival AND free to enter. Welsh speaker or not, everyone is welcome — there's a kids' village, street food market stalls, literature, arts and sports too. Doors open 12pm Saturday, 11am Sunday.

Here's where to be and what to know this weekend.

SOUTH WALES | Father's Day done differently — and brilliantly

Wales' largest free outdoor multicultural festival marks its 20th anniversary on Sunday at Roald Dahl Plass in Cardiff Bay. The Mela runs midday to 7pm and brings together 15+ local, national and international artists alongside food stalls, mehndi artists, funfair rides, market stalls, dance, fashion and community zones. Previous editions have pulled in 30,000 visitors — and 2026 is set to be bigger than ever.

This is proper family stuff: vibrant, free, beautiful location right on the Bay, and a genuine celebration of Cardiff's diversity. Perfect if you're heading down Cardiff way with the family on Father's Day.

NORTH WALES | For the sporty dads (and those who just love a beachfront atmosphere)

The Menai Holiday Cottages Abersoch Triathlon takes over one of the most spectacular stretches of coastline in North Wales this Saturday. Offering both Olympic (1,500m swim / 40km bike / 10km run) and Sprint (750m / 20km / 5km) distances, this is one of Wales' most beloved triathlon events — selling out every year and boasting a genuinely electric post-race atmosphere on the beach, complete with live music and a beach bar.

You don't need to race to enjoy it — Abersoch on a summer's day is worth the trip alone. Olympic distance kicks off at 8am, Sprint at 10am (and again 2:30pm). Get yourself down to that beach finish line — the atmosphere is electric.

The ninth annual Kite Festival this weekend — a brilliant family-friendly event taking place across both Saturday and Sunday. The skies of mid/north Wales will be full of colour and spectacle. Free, cheerful, and genuinely magical if you've got little ones.

CARDIFF If cricket is your thing, there's live first-class action at Sophia Gardens this weekend as Glamorgan take on Surrey in a County Championship Division One match running from Friday 19th through to Monday 22nd June. Glamorgan are in the top division for the first time since 2005 this season — a cracking reason to get down to one of the most picturesque cricket grounds in Wales. Entrance is reasonably priced and the ground is a lovely place to spend a few hours in the sun.

WEST WALES The National Trust's beautiful Georgian estate near Aberaeron is running Llanerchaeron Discovery Days this weekend — guided experiences exploring the history of the estate through the real characters of people who lived and worked there. Perfect for a gentler, more reflective Father's Day outing with brilliant Ceredigion countryside all around you.

WALES-WIDE Whether your dad is an adventurer, a foodie, a golf enthusiast or someone who just wants a proper afternoon tea — Wales is the place this Father's Day. Visit Wales have pulled together a full guide of ideas including:

A warm, settled spell is arriving just in time for the weekend, with Sunday the absolute standout — and the heat building further into next week. Pack a light layer for the evenings, but days are looking proper summery.

☀️ Friday 19 June — 22°C Partly cloudy with dry spells and a light westerly breeze. A solid start to the weekend — low rain risk and pleasant enough to be out and about.

☀️ Saturday 20 June — 21°C Largely dry with a low rain risk (around 10%). A touch of cloud here and there but no real threat of rain — good conditions for Tafwyl at Cardiff Castle or the Abersoch Triathlon up north.

🌞 Sunday 21 June (Father's Day) — 28°C The warmest day of the weekend by some distance. Warm, largely sunny and a brilliant day to be outside — whether that's Cardiff Mela at the Bay, a stroll along the coast, or simply treating dad to something special. Barely any rain risk at all.

🌡️ Monday 22 June — 31°C The heat builds further. Hot and mostly dry — the warmest day of the run. Just a small chance of a passing shower, but this is peak summer stuff.

⛅ Tuesday 23 June — 27°C Still very warm, though a touch more cloud nudging in. A slight shower chance possible but still a fine day overall — don't write it off.

Bottom line for the weekend: a belter. Saturday is dry and pleasant, but Sunday is the one — 28°C, low rain risk and long evening light. Whether you're dancing at Tafwyl, cheering on triathletes at Abersoch beach, or treating dad to a walk along the Pembrokeshire coast, the weather is firmly on your side.
